Brothers Hold Off Fulton
Christian Brothers Academy stops Red Raiders 31-27 in sectional title game

Fulton has yet to figure out how to beat Christian Brothers Academy. Sophomore Greg Paulus threw for over 180 yards and three touchdowns, while running for a score as the Brothers defeated Fulton 31-27 for the Section III Class A championship on Nov. 10 at the Carrier Dome. The win gave CBA its sixth consecutive sectional title since 1997.

The Red Raiders jumped out to an early lead on the legs of junior Ryan Hanson. A 45-yard run by Hanson highlighted the Fulton drive that took 5 minutes and 30 seconds. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Fulton quarterback Collin Blake, giving the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead with six and a half minutes left in the first quarter.

Behind early, CBA went to the shotgun and Paulus delivered. After their opening drive stalled, the Brothers mounted an attack against the tough Fulton defense. Using quick passes, CBA moved the ball to midfield as the first quarter ended. In the second quarter, Paulus hooked up with senior Matt Whyland for a 16-yard pass to the Fulton 16. A personal foul by Fulton added additional yards onto the play, giving CBA first and goal. After two uneventful plays, Paulus found Whyland in the end zone for the touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 two minutes into the second quarter.

Coming Together Our Lady of Solace & St. Therese parish youth groups have first joint youth Mass
By Blessed Sacrament staff/ SUN contributing writers
“We can make a difference, we can make a change. We can make the sun shine through the rain.” These were the words enthusiastically sung out by the senior youth group of St. Therese the Little Flower of Jesus Church and Our Lady of Solace Church, both in Syracuse, at their first youth Mass on Nov. 3. Held at St. Therese Church, the Mass thanked God for all his blessings and celebrated the teenagers’ commitments to make a difference.

The youth Mass marked the first of its kind for the senior youth group. The teens participated in every aspect of the Mass. They led parishioners in song and prayer. They composed the Prayers of the Faithful. They served as greeters, altar servers and extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist. They also chose the Mass’ theme – “We can make a difference.”

Shakir Patterson, senior youth group member, said that the youth Mass was a way for the group to connect with the parish while at the same time adding their own unique touch to the service. “We wanted to have a youth Mass to get involved with the church but we also wanted it to be ‘our’ Mass. So we tried to do something different, like with the music. We found songs that were upbeat and that we liked,” Patterson explained.
