St. John the Baptist’s Young Adults Group Developing it’s Christian Life

Rome — Father Gregory Golyzniak, parochial vicar of St. John the Baptist Church, initiated a young adults group last June. He started the group because he noticed that the young adults in the parish didn’t have a social organization of their own. He visited every parish in Rome with his idea of starting the group. “We should be focusing on parishioners in this age range,” said Father John Hogan, pastor of St. John the Baptist. He explained that the young adult age group sometimes falls through the cracks. The parish offers activities for elementary students, high school students and families, but the young adult parishioners are left out of activities. Father Golyzniak is moderator of the young adults group. This group is made up of young adults who are in college, students who are working and young couples. It includes all those who are trying to develop their Christian life through social work, charity work, sports, Christian studies and church activities. Based on the principles of faith, sport and friendship, the group attempts to steer their energy toward Christian service through personal interaction and acting as a church community. Activities include playing sports, evenings of entertainment such as films, games and discussions on a variety of topics.

The Christian Brothers Academy Football Program has Knocked at the Door Many Times

Roaming from Class C to Class B to Class A and now to Class AA, CBA has almost always been able to earn a berth in the state tournament, however the championship had eluded the Brothers at every level.

With a constellation of high school talent perhaps never seen before in Central New York, CBA finally claimed that crown Saturday night with a gritty display on the Carrier Dome’s bright green carpet as they defeated defending AA champion New Rochelle 41-35. “It’s the best feeling in the world,” said CBA wide receiver/defensive back Bruce Williams. “For four hard years I’ve been at this and for four hard years our team has been at this. Just coming out to win this and then pulling it out at the end was the best feeling in the world. I feel so great right now.”

Going into the contest, the Huegonots, with their powerful rushing attack led by Syracuse University-bound running back Ray Rice, had won 23 consecutive games, including the 2003 state championship. CBA’s solar system has, for the past four years, orbited around the unique talents of quarterback Greg Paulus, ranked by many publications not only as the nation’s top quarterback prospect, but also the top point guard. After the game, Paulus beamed, noting that the enormity of defeating a team that had not lost in 23 games had yet to settle in. “It hasn’t even hit me. It feels so surreal. It’s unbelievable,” the Brothers standout signal caller said. “Maybe it won’t hit me for another couple of weeks or maybe tomorrow, but right now it’s just awesome.”
