Gaelic Knights Open Season With Victory

The Bishop Ludden varsity boys’ basketball team opened its 2003-04 campaign with a 72-61 victory over Liverpool. Last season, the Warriors went undefeated during the regular season en route to a league championship. Senior sharpshooter Terry Smith scored 22 points including one 3-pointer. Smith was followed by Josh Keding’s 14 points and Phil Oropallo’s 13. Kevin Barrett scored 11 points.
CBA Girls Hoops Topples Solvay

The Christian Brothers Academy varsity girls’ basketball team opened its season with a convincing 70-42 win over Solvay. The Brothers scored by committee with Morgan Donovan leading the pack with 13 points followed by Maureen Mannion’s 12. Amanda Billy and Christina Stuphon each scored nine points, and Jessica Ockenden scored eight. Mannion, Billy, and Donovan each scored one 3-pointer apiece. The Warriors leapt out to a commanding 22-7 lead in the first quarter and then never trailed. The team’s next game was against Jordan-Elbridge and the Brothers will tip off Dec. 11 at home against Skaneateles.
CBA Hockey Edges Notre Dame

The Notre Dame varsity ice hockey team fell to Christian Brothers Academy 3-2 Saturday. Matt Firman led the Brothers with two goals and one assist. AJ Tomeny scored CBA’s other goal. Mike Buck, Jack Harmantuck and Alex Kirby were each credited with assists in the season-opening victory. Dave Kanter had 25 saves for CBA. Bill Dundon and Don Talerico each scored goals for the Jugglers. Peyton Dziura, Tristan Hobbes, Rob Morton, and John Thibault each had one assist apiece. Jim Thayer had 17 saves for Notre Dame before Quinn Agen entered the game and stopped two shots on goal. Notre Dame Boys Hoops Roll Past Oneida

The Notre Dame varsity boys’ basketball team toppled Oneida 79-59 Friday night. Jermiko Thomas led the Jugglers with 20 points. Dan Durr and Sean Burton followed with 15 and 11 points respectively. Both Durr and Burton had three 3-point goals apiece. The Jugglers improved to 2-0 in league play and 3-0 overall with the victory.
Seton Catholic Falls In Opener

The Seton Catholic Central varsity boys’ basketball team dropped its Southern Tier Athletic Conference opener against Oneonta 45-40 last Tuesday night in Binghamton.
Three Dolphin Men’s Soccer Players Earn All-Region Honors

Le Moyne’s Scott Newman (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill), Andy Plum (Harwood, Md./Bowie), and Richard Shaw (Blackpool, England/Bryant & Stratton) were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Men’s Soccer All-New England Region team. The three Dolphins were named to the region’s second team. Le Moyne has landed a player on the all-region team in each of the four seasons Tom Bonus has served as the head coach. Matt Cooper Named Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week

Le Moyne College freshman Matt Cooper (Fulton, N.Y./Fulton) was recently named the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week. Cooper, a reserve forward from Fulton, averaged 13 points and 9.5 rebounds in Le Moyne’s two games last week. Le Moyne Basketball Nets Second Win Senior point guard Rob Thorpe (Sherrill, N.Y./V-V-S) scored 28 points to lead Le Moyne to a 72-68 upset win over No. 21 Assumption at Laska Gymnasium. The Dolphins (2-4, 2-3 NE-10) won for the first time in 17 regular season meetings between the two teams in Worcester, Mass.

Thorpe headed four Dolphins in double figures. Brendan Bayly (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park) scored 12, Jason Coleman (Albany, N.Y./Bishop Maginn) 10 and Matt Cooper (Fulton, N.Y./Fulton) also chipped in 10.
