Commissioning ceremony for the Formation for Ministry Program held Sept. 11

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was filled with family and friends on Sunday, Sept. 11, as 28 candidates representing seven ministries of the church were commissioned to serve their parishes. Five individuals were recognized for re-commissioning in their individual areas. Bishop James Moynihan and Bishop Thomas Costello were both present at the Rite of Commissioning for the Formation for Ministry Program.

Bishop Moynihan welcomed those attending by saying, “My friends, the needs of the church are many and varied. God sends us pastoral workers to care for the church…may they be effective in their work and persevering in prayer.”

Father Joseph Scardella is in charge of the Formation for Ministry Program and he described the work the ministers have completed to get to their commissioning day.

“For the past two years these people have completed courses, they’ve worked in their area of ministry, they’ve attended retreats, they’ve been affirmed by their sponsors as people gifted and called to share their gifts with the church,” Father Scardella said.

In his homily, Father Scardella talked about the difference of offering service and of being a servant.

“When the focus of our ministry becomes how much time I spent, what I get out of it, that’s not ministry,” Father Scardella said.

He said that ministry requires two things: poverty of heart and poverty of mind. When one is filled with his/her own convictions and ideas and concepts of their own, there is little room to listen to anyone else.

“Poverty of mind means that you have a willingness to recognize that we do not have all the answers. The best I can do is offer myself for the benefit of others,” Father Scardella explained.

Poverty of heart, Father Scardella said, refers to a heart that is filled with prejudice, worries, jealousies, etc. When that is the case, he said, there is little room to serve another. “In ministry we must be careful not to equate God’s presence with our fervor. God is much greater than our heart. God is much greater than our mind,” he said. “Poverty of heart creates a space where others feel welcome.”

Two candidates in Family Ministry, John and Mary Milligan, provided a special remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 after the conferral of certificates to the candidates. The hymn, “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” followed their remembrance which Mary had written and John presented.

Bishop Moynihan concluded the ceremony by thanking the facilitators and Father Scardella for their participation in the program. He also told the newly-commissioned ministers that they were now “charged officially” with the responsibility of committing themselves to service in a very specific way. He also introduced the new diocesan director of Youth Ministry, Robert Walter, saying, “We look forward to great things from you.” New Diocesan Ministers
