On a recent cold and windy evening students and faculty at Bishop Grimes Prep welcomed Catholic elementary school students and their families for an evening of music and arts showcasing the talents of past, present and future Bishop Grimes students. The curtain raised and the Master of Ceremonies, Christie Casiano, Bishop Grimes Class of ‘79 and News Channel 9 anchor, welcomed a packed audience who where eager to hear the jazz band, instrumentalists, and chorus.
Performances showcased a variety of talents such as The Glee Club performance from St. Margaret’s School, the jazz band performance from Bishop Grimes Prep, and the choir performances from Holy Cross, Blessed Sacrament, St. Rose and Bishop Grimes Prep. The Eastman School of Music was also represented with a musical performance from Helen Verchota and Rob McManmon, both graduates of Bishop Grimes and students at Eastman.
Not only were musical talents of students on display that evening, but a selection of artwork from Bishop Grimes students was also showcased. To add to the talent on offer, Christie Casciano presented her new book, The Puck Hog and signed copies of it for her fans. Her sister, RoseMary Casciano Moziak, the book’s illustrator, was also available to sign copies.
Sue Cerrone, musical director of the St. Margaret’s School Glee Club reflected on the event. “In 5th and 6th grade there is a tendency for students to drop out of choir and band. Events like this Music and Arts Showcase, where they get to perform on the high school stage, are a great motivator for students to continue to participate in the performing arts.”
Sophie LeComte, a 6th grader from Holy Cross, performing violinist, and future Bishop Grimes Prep student summed up the value that the experience of performing at the Music and Arts Showcase offered. “Now that I know people like my song, it gives me more confidence to perform at other places,” she said.
The Music and Arts Showcase at Bishop Grimes was a fundraising event for the Campaign for Curtains Fund — an effort to raise money to buy new stage curtains and other stage enhancements for the school.
