Each year, Holy Family Church in Syracuse takes time on Memorial Weekend to pay tribute to veterans, particularly those who have given their lives for their country, by hosting a solemn Mass of Remembrance.
This year, the Town of Camillus Memorial Parade Committee will combine efforts with Holy Family Parish for that special celebration — a change in location from previous years for this committee.
This religious service, open to all, will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 at Holy Family Church, 120 Chapel Dr., Syracuse. This is an opportunity to begin Memorial Day Weekend commemorating with veterans, military personnel, gold star parents and invited guests.
Veterans planning to attend are asked to arrive 10-15 minutes before Mass begins and to bring with them a veteran/military cap, insignia or medal to be placed at the altar steps as they process into church led by the Camillus Police Color Guard. These items can be retrieved upon leaving.
The Voices of Faith, formerly the True Fellowship Ecumenical Choir, led by Jack Gardner, will provide music throughout the Mass, as well as a musical tribute beginning at 4:40 p.m. before Mass.
At this time, Holy Family Parish enjoys several other annual endeavors on Memorial Weekend including a display of military photos and other memorabilia put together by veteran Charles Cooney. Please contact him at (315) 488-3541 to share your mementos for the evening.
Secondly, an essay contest on “What Memorial Day Means to Me” held for fifth and sixth grade students continues this year with the winner reading his or her entry after the Mass of Remembrance and receiving a $100 Wal-Mart gift card.
Entries, with phone number included, are due by May 16 at the Parish Office to the attention of Ellen McCauley. For more information on the essay contest, call (315) 468-4233.
Thirdly, the Parish Life and Worship Committee along with the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring the Frank Donati Care Package Program for the troops. They honor those who have given their lives by tending to the needs of those currently serving.
Bins will be in the gathering space of the church to collect the following items: store-packaged snacks, hard candy, gum, AA batteries, moist hand wipes, stationery, magazines/CDs/DVDs (new or gently used), canned tuna, Chapstick, toilet tissue, small Kleenex packages, ankle socks and personal care products.
The Knights of Columbus are also requesting help with monetary donations to cover shipping. Checks can be made payable to: “Knights of Columbus Christ the King Council #4114” and sent to:
