Order of Malta to host Defense of the Faith forum

The local chapter of the Order of Malta is sponsoring its second annual Defense of the Faith Forum on Ascension Thursday, June 2,  at a noon luncheon at the Genesee Grande Hotel at 1060 E. Genesee St. in Syracuse. The public is invited to attend.
Guest speaker is the noted author, professor and co-producer of several series on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN),  Father Charles P. Connor.
Father Connor was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Scranton in 1990, and after several assignments in his diocese, was sent for further graduate work at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family at the Catholic University of America.
The title of Father Connor’s timely talk will be “Faith and American Culture,” an absorbing subject much concentrated upon at the Institute and one of interest to every member of the Catholic faith, including young singles, married couples, grandparents, priests and religious.
Father Connor is the author of several books, including Classic Catholic Converts (2001); Defenders of the Faith in Word and Deed (2003); Meditations on the Catholic Priesthood (2005); The Saint for the Third Millenium: Therese of Lisieux (2007); The Spiritual Legacy of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (2009) and A Transformative Element: The Contributions of John Cardinal O’Connor to the Culture of Life in the United States (2011).
Father Connor has co-produced several series on EWTN including: “The History of the Catholic Church in the United States”; “Historic Catholic Converts”; “Defenders of the Faith in Word and Deed”; “Doctors of the Church”; “The Catholic Priesthood throughout the Ages”; “Therese of Lisieux: A Saint for the Third Millenium”; “The Sacraments Throughout the Ages”; and most recently the first portion of a general survey of church history titled “The Catholic Church through the Ages.” He has also appeared on Mother Angelica Live and Marcus Grodi’s “Journey Home” as well as “The World Over,” EWTN’s national news program.
Father Connor received a Ph.B. in Philosophy from Catholic University in Louvain in Belgium, an S.T.B. and M.A. in Theology from the Gregorian and Angelicum Universities in Rome, and a Ph. D. in U.S. history from Fordham University in New York City.
The Order of Malta is the fourth oldest religious order of Christendom, preceded by the Basilians, the Augustinians, and the Benedictines, and traces its origins to 1099 when it was founded by its first rector, Blessed Gerard.
The Order has a rich historical past and presently has over 12,000 members in 59 countries worldwide. The mission of the Order is to defend the Magisterium and to care for the sick and the poor. The symbol of the Order is an eight-pointed white star, which symbolize the Beatitudes.
The Syracuse local chapter of the Knights and Dames of Malta is affiliated with the Federal Association located in Washington, D.C.
