Barbara Kane named Parish Life Director for Southeast Broome County

Bishop Robert J. Cunningham has announced that Barbara Kane of Binghamton will be appointed as Parish Life Director for the parishes of Southeast Broome County.
The four parish communities of St. Joseph, Deposit; St. Mary, Kirkwood; St. Joseph, Sanitaria Springs; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Windsor, have been clustered for collaboration since July 2008.
Kane succeeds Father Thomas Catucci in leading the Catholic Community of Southeast Broome County.
Msgr. John Putano, who serves as the regional vicar for Broome and Chenango Counties, will act as the supervising pastor. Father Robert Sullivan, Father Thomas Hobbes and Father Robert Dwyer will continue their present ministries to the parishes. The Mass schedule will remain unchanged.
A Parish Life Director is appointed by the bishop to lead the day-to-day life of a parish or parishes. This model is envisioned in Canon 517.2 of the Code of Canon Law that guides the administrative life of the Catholic Church. A Parish Life Director coordinates, directs or facilitates pastoral care and liturgical life; administrates and guides planning, business, facilities, budget, training, education, staff and volunteers; works with the collaborative bodies and councils; and is the official representative of the parish.
Kane is a native of Binghamton. She has served as a parish Director of Faith Formation, and later as a pastoral associate for 29 years, first at St. Paul’s in Binghamton and later at St. Ambrose in Endicott. She holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., and a bachelor’s degree in business and psychology from SUNY Oswego. Kane has completed a certificate in spiritual direction and is a recipient of the Bishop Harrison Award for excellence in catechetical ministry. Kane is the co-founder and director of the Sophia Center for Spirituality in Binghamton.
Kane will begin her role in mid-January. Each parish community will host opportunities to meet and greet her. Initially, she will begin her efforts at facilitating parish life by meeting with parish lay leadership and others to develop a pastoral plan for the future.
