St Mary’s service project adds up to helping others

The fourth grade students at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Cortland have been busy collecting hats, coats, mittens and boots over the past few weeks as part of a school service project. While collecting the winter clothing the fourth grade students used the items to incorporate math into their studies by creating graphs and word problems related to the items collected.

Also during the collection, the fourth grade students collaborated with Pre-K students for a “buddy program”, helping the Pre-K students create posters about the collection and learning how to guide and lead the younger students.

On Nov. 17, the collected items were given to Cortland-Chenango Rural Services, a Catholic ministry located in Cincinnatus that provides emergency services and outreach support to those in need in Cortland and Chenango counties.
