Obituary: Father Paul J. Slavetskas

Rev. Paul J. Slavetskas, 69, is now at peace with the Lord after a long illness. He passed away on Nov. 27, 2015.

Father Slavetskas is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Rosalie Slavetskas; a sister, Joan; and a brother, Michael. He is survived by Rita Slavetskas and Emil Michaux, Anne Marie and Les Distin, James and Kim, Remy and Sherry, Joseph and Vickie, Sue (Kodey) Slavetskas; several nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Birte Paterson.

Father Slavetskas graduated from St. Patrick’s School, Binghamton; St. Andrew’s, Rochester, N.Y.; and St. Bernard’s Seminary, Rochester. He was ordained a priest at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Syracuse, N.Y. on June 26, 1971. His assignments included St. Mary’s, Cortland; Blessed Sacrament, Johnson City; St. Ann’s and St. Paul’s, Binghamton; St. Daniel and Most Holy Rosary, Syracuse; Unity Acres (Home for Homeless Men) Orwell, N.Y.; and St. John the Baptist, Syracuse. He was chaplain for the Catholic Daughters of Cortland, N.Y. and part-time chaplain at Our Lady of Lourdes and Wilson Hospital. He was a full-time chaplain to the nursing homes of the Triple Cities and James Square Nursing Home.

A Memorial Mass for Father Slavetskas will be celebrated on Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Binghamton. Bishop Robert J. Cunningham will be the main celebrant.
