If you’re praying for Syracuse wins on Saturday and Sunday, Cathedral Candle Company might have just the thing for you.

The company is offering 100 limited-edition orange devotional candles.

“I’m sure we weren’t the only ones in Syracuse watching and praying for a win last weekend,” L. John Steigerwald IV, marketing and sales representative for Cathedral, said in a press release. “We wanted to show our team spirit and since devotional candles like these are usually lit in churches with a prayer, we figure that lighting some orange and blue candles certainly can’t hurt our chances this weekend.”

You can purchase a set of orange and blue candles for $10, or buy the individual candles for $6 each. You can find them at M.E. Burgess & Co., 1900 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale; the Onondaga Historical Association, 321 Montgomery St., Syracuse; and The Franciscan Place at Destiny USA. The limited-edition run will be available through the first week of April or while supplies last. As of Thursday afternoon, all three locations still had the candles in stock, but noted that they were flying off shelves.

As far as Cathedral can tell, Steigerwald said, this is the first time the Syracuse-based company has produced orange candles since its founding in 1897. Orange is not a liturgical color, so there hasn’t been a need previously, he explained.

So why an orange candle now? “To have the men and women playing in the Final Four is really exciting,” Steigerwald said. “And who would have thought we’d be where we are after this season?”

“I don’t know if it’s divine intervention, but certainly, I’m sure, extra prayers can’t hurt,” he added.
