IC Church and School bustle with sacred and seasonal events

On June 15, Immaculate Conception School started a new tradition this year with the Inaugural “Senior Walk.” Principal Nancy Ferrarone and Father Ryan welcomed the alumni graduates of 2016. The graduating seniors from Cazenovia High School, Fayetteville-Manlius, Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse) and Northwood (Lake Placid) visited their former school building in their caps and gowns and walked through the school. IC School students and teachers lined the halls giving high fives to the seniors. This Senior Walk is an inspirational reminder to the younger students of the benefits and joys of getting a high school diploma and looking forward to the future. After the Senior Walk they stopped at the IC Church Grotto for a group picture.

With no priestly ordinations this year, Holy Hour for Vocations trusts in the Lord

One is three years from his goal; the other has been at it for almost 70 years. Seminarian Joseph Ryan and Sister Colette Walter were among the dozens of attendees on Saturday, June 4, at the Holy Hour for Vocations at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse.  On the first Saturday in June, the diocese typically has a priestly ordination, but Ryan noted that no ordinand was lying prostrate, symbolizing selflessness, in the sanctuary. But he is on track to make sure that is not the case in 2025.

Asked if he’s happy with his choice, he said: “It’s been amazing; in these last four years I’ve been able to work in high schools, visit people in nursing homes and hospitals, serve at the altar. … I’m so happy I followed this path.”

Golf day in Verona supports Catholic school scholarships

Ninety players tackle scenic course in Verona to support scholarships

They figured it was the Payne Stewart socks. Deacon Greg Cross shot a hole in one June 20 in the first annual Light a Child’s Future Syracuse Diocese Catholic Schools Charity Golf Tournament at Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone in Verona. Deacon Cross was wearing his socks bearing a photo of Stewart winning the U.S. Open in 1999 at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

“The spirit of Payne Stewart was upon me,” the deacon said. “That’s what did it,” his playing partner retired Deacon Guy Hart said of the Stewart socks. Deacon Cross used a “two-thirds 9-iron” to ace the par 3 third hole, “only 118 yards,” amid a “gale force” wind, he said. “I put the peg in the ground,” he explained. “I put the ball on the peg. I swung at it with my club and the ball went in the hole.”

Utica parishes come together to celebrate Confirmations

By Fran Perritano Contributing Writer

The Rev. Thomas R. Servatius, pastor of Historic Old St. John’s Church in Utica, said if there is one thing for the young adults who were confirmed recently in his church to remember it is “that God is nuts about them.”  “God loves them incredibly,” Servatius said. “And that they need to remember that and believe that and remind each other that God is nuts about them. God deeply, deeply loves them unconditionally. They walk away with that and carry it through the rest of their lives, that’s a wonderful thing.”
