Pope Francis, 88, dies on Easter Monday

By Tami S. Scott, Editor

In the early morning hours of April 21, Easter Monday, the world learned of the passing of Pope Francis at the age of 88. Though frail and ill for some time, the news came unexpectedly. Pope Francis made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, offering a blessing following Mass at St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. He appeared on the balcony over the basilica entrance for more than 20 minutes.

Hours after the announcement, Bishop Douglas J. Lucia and Bishop-emeritus Robert J. Cunningham concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

In his homily, Bishop Lucia quoted part of the pope’s Urbi et Orbi message on Easter Sunday, emphasizing God’s mercy and the Resurrection as the foundation of Christian hope.

“Pope Francis, in his Easter message just yesterday, said:

Global pastor: In word and deed, pope preached mercy, outreach

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis, who died April 21 at the age of 88, gave new energy to millions of Catholics — and caused concern for some — as he transformed the image of the papacy into a pastoral ministry based on personal encounters and strong convictions about poverty, mission and dialogue.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The conclave that begins May 7 is expected to be the largest in history, with a wide geographical mix of cardinal-electors.

There are 135 cardinals under the age of 80 and eligible to vote in a papal election. By contrast, 115 cardinals took part in the conclaves in 2005 and 2013.
