Vicariate V Hope Appeal kickoff includes Greater Utica area
By Tami S. Scott

“This is not a test,” said Beth Hoey, executive director of the Foundation of the Diocese of Syracuse, “but let me just ask you, what comes to mind when you think of stewardship?”
Approximately 65 guests who attended the Hope Appeal kickoff for Vicariate V, which covers the Greater Utica area, listened intently to Hoey’s introduction. The event was held Sept. 3 at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford.
Hoey continued that while money is a part of stewardship, it’s just a small part when factored into the term’s full meaning. She then followed up with a list of three elements that define what exactly is stewardship.

Always be ready to share your hope
By Andrea Slaven
Director of Child and Family Catechesis
Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States sets aside the third Sunday in September to celebrate Catechetical Sunday, a day to honor those who teach the faith and to remind all of us of our call to share the Good News. This year’s theme, taken from St. Peter’s first letter, is: “Always be ready to give an explanation … for a reason for your hope” (1 Pet 3:15).
This theme is especially fitting in a world that often seems divided and discouraged. Our hope as Christians is not built on things that change,

For women in the Syracuse Diocese seeking ways to deepen their faith and strengthen their connection to our Holy Mother, the 15th Annual Women’s Conference will provide a list of opportunities to do just that — all in one day. This year’s conference features some new, exciting offerings while still following the familiar format of conferences in years past. During this day of faith, inspiration, and renewal, attendees will encounter grace-filled opportunities such as:

On Sept. 21, at 4 p.m., Dr. Brian DuSell, music director and organist at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Syracuse, will perform an organ concert at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and Shrine in Oswego. The concert commemorates the 100th anniversary of a dedication concert performed by Charles Courboin, a world-renowned organist, that took place on Aug. 25, 1925. Dr. DuSell will be recreating that concert in full based on an original program in St. Mary’s archives. He said he feels that the selections exhibit the full range of the organ’s capability.
