A popular ‘Lessons and Carols’ debuts in new home

Beloved Christmas program will be held at Our Lady of Hope Parish

By Dc. Tom Cuskey, editor

Change opens doors to new opportunities and sometimes a new home for old traditions.

When Tom Andino left Le Moyne College after a 20-year career in campus ministry, he carried many fond memories and warm relationships with him. In addition to being named Director of Deacon Formation for the Diocese of Syracuse, he continues his role as music director at St. Michael’s/St. Peter’s Parish on Onondaga Hill and Our Lady of Hope in Syracuse’s Valley neighborhood. Now, his musical past is about to catch up with him as a popular holiday event gains new life.

“Lessons and Carols,” a popular Christmas offering that drew large crowds to the Jesuit campus will be offered in its grand tradition at Our Lady of Hope Church on December 15.

One can thank Father Michael Galuppi for the inspiration. The pastor of St Michael’s/St. Peter’s and Our Lady of Hope, as well as a Le Moyne alumnus, Father Michael didn’t attend the musical event as a student there, but after attending several of the more recent performances, he now brings a definite enthusiasm to this relocated opportunity.

Celebrating Safe Environment Week

By Dc. Tom Cuskey, editor

Safe Environment Week, recognizing the good work being done to protect children and vulnerable adults, is celebrated this year on Monday, November 18 through Sunday, November 24.

While the work of safe environment ministry is a 24-7 effort, there are two special times each year when we recognize those who dedicate their time and talent. Jacqueline Bressette, the diocesan Director of Safe Environment and Victim Assistance, said that Awareness Week each April focuses primarily on the training and the facilitators who work to educate every member of clergy and staff as well as volunteers who work with youth and vulnerable adults. In November, Safe Environment Week focuses more on the site coordinators across our seven-county diocese, the frontline people coordinating efforts at our schools, parishes and institutions.

Blessed by adoption

By Tami S. Scott, associate editor

In 2013, I spent six weeks and one day in Colombia. You could say it was my maternity leave after a nine-month-plus pregnancy. It was well worth the wait — and a bonus, no weight gain!

November is National Adoption Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the need for adoptive families for children not only within the United States but around the world.

My then-husband and I had decided to adopt older siblings after thoroughly researching the different types of adoptions, both in the

Seven tips to help discern a vocational calling

As this column comes to print, it is “National Vocation Awareness Week” (November 3–9, 2024). This annual observance is a weeklong celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States and is dedicated to promoting vocations to the ministerial priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, along with praying specifically for those engaged in considering (discerning) one of these vocations.

Racing Through Ordinary Time

By Lucia A. Silecchia

I spent last Sunday on the sidelines of a marathon cheering for thousands who accomplished something I respect – but may never fully understand!  The weather was stunning, the crowd was enthusiastic, and it is always exciting to root for a loved one crossing the finish line.

I may never run a marathon in my lifetime, and those who know me best would likely bet against the likelihood of that achievement.   Yet, I learned much as a spectator.

First, I noticed that those of us on the sidelines yelled out two kinds of cheers.  Many of us were rooting for the specific person or people we had come to encourage.  With an app diligently loaded on our phones, we could
