Endicott’s Mercy House opens new wing
By Dc. Tom Picciano, contributing writer
A large crowd looked on as the new McDevitt wing of Mercy House of the Southern Tier was dedicated early last month.
Mercy House, a community care shelter, has been serving the terminally ill since 2016 in the former St. Casimir’s church. “We began with 10 beds and a mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and love,” said Father Clarence Rumble, Mercy House founder.
“At the time, I certainly never imagined that we would be here one day expanding our home to include six more rooms.” Father Rumble added. “The expansion is more than just bricks and mortar. It certainly is a testament to the heart of this community, a community that has not only embraced our mission but uplifted it.”
Father Rumble thanked those in attendance for their support, which he said had made the moment possible.
“With this addition, we hope to respond more effectively to the growing needs of our neighbors,” he said, “certainly offering a place and presence for those at the end of life. Mercy House has always been more than a facility. It is a place where the human spirit is honored.”
Father added that Mercy House cares for not only residents but their families, too.
“Compassion is not just a word, it’s a way of life,” he said.

St. Mary’s Academy responds to NYS Education Department’s new graduation requirements
By Eileen Jevis, staff writer
St. Mary’s Academy recently announced it is taking the school in a new direction.
To prepare the students for an enhanced educational experience and to combat declining enrollment, the school will be working towards becoming both a Montessori and Baccalaureate (IB) accredited school.
The new learning model is part of St. Mary’s Academy’s three–five-year strategic plan and is in response to the New York State Education Department’s Portrait of a Graduate Program. The initiative is intended to create a shared understanding of the skills and knowledge that New York State public school graduates have mastered.

‘Please be a priest for us’
By Fr. Christopher Seibt, Syracuse Diocese vice chancellor and pastor of Divine Mercy Parish & The Mission of St. Bernadette, Central Square, and Sacred Heart, Cicero
Whenever a young man was ordained to the priesthood from Saint Daniel Parish in Lyncourt, Monsignor Yennock, the pastor from 1981 to 2021, was asked by the newly ordained priest to preach his Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving at the parish.
In what came to be known as his iconic reflection on the priesthood, Msgr. Yennock said, “If I may speak from [all my] years of life as a priest, it is my experience that what people expect of the newly ordained man is that he simply be a priest. The people say to us, ‘Please be a priest for us!’” He then followed this powerful plea with a litany of various important duties of the priest that pertain to his ministry of teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
