Family/Respect Life Healing Ministries: Part One
Supporting those who carry the crosses of infertility and pregnancy loss
By Elizabeth Landry
Staff writer
As we continue celebrating Respect Life Month, The Catholic Sun is delving into the many beautiful healing ministries the Family/Respect Life Office provides to those in the Diocese of Syracuse. One such ministry is geared toward couples and families navigating the often difficult journeys of pregnancy loss and infertility. The statistics surrounding these topics are astounding: the World Health Organization estimates 1 in 6 people globally experience infertility, and the March of Dimes estimates that 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

(Editor’s note: A Mass for Life was also celebrated on Oct. 6 at Notre Dame Jr/Sr High School in Utica, on Oct. 9 at Seton Catholic Central in Binghamton, and one is scheduled for Oct. 28 at Holy Cross Academy in Oneida.)
What does a baseball player from the 1950s have to do with a Respect Life Mass? Father Dennis Walker brought the two themes together with one sentence: “Every human being has value.”
Pope Leo XIV encourages, shares gratitude with the Catholic Charities network
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — As Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) hosts the 115th annual gathering of the Catholic Charities network this week, Pope Leo XIV sent a letter expressing gratitude for the life-giving ministries of Catholic Charities agencies spread out across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. In his letter, the Pope imparted his Apostolic Blessing upon all members of the Catholic Charities network for their work on behalf of the most vulnerable families and individuals in their communities.
“Dear friends, I express my heartfelt gratitude for all that you and those who work with your networks do each day to put into practice the Lord’s admonition to see and serve him in the poor, hungry, homeless, and people in any kind of need (cf. Mt 25:31-46),” Pope Leo XIV wrote. “May Christ continue to accompany you and give you his joy and peace.”

“We prove our love for Jesus by what we do, by who we are.” – Mother Theresa
Even when commemorating their accomplishments over the past 100 years, Catholic Charities of Oneida/Madison County used the festivities as a way to give back to the community. As part of the recent centennial celebration held last month, organizers held a raffle with all proceeds going to the Community Assistance Program that provides basic human needs for its clients.
