Some parts of the greater Syracuse area and points east saw as much as ten inches of snow in the hours leading up to the annual IGNITE Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 23. Anywhere from 5 inches or more blanketed the immediate areas surrounding the host site at Bishop Ludden High School.

So what?

That was the general reaction of approximately 600 men of faith who came together to praise God, share fellowship and enjoy the wise words of the day’s trio of speakers, all courtesy of the Diocese of Syracuse conference team.

Ed Kirk of St. Mary of the Assumption in Baldwinsville has been the chairman of the event since its beginning in 2009, and a good number of attendees come back year after year. Why?

For example, one can explain the importance of the Corporal Works of Mercy in a world of need, or one can demonstrate how to care for others, especially those less fortunate, in real-time situations.

Cathedral to Host Syracuse Brass Ensemble

The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble presents its Spring Concert at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse on Sunday April 14 at 1 p.m.  The Cathedral is located at 259 E. Onondaga Street on Columbus Circle.  This will be the third year that the concert has been hosted by the Cathedral.

 DPC discussions focus on synod, simpler approach to priest evaluations

A new approach to the process of pastor and priest evaluations is underway in the diocese and it was one of several topics on the agenda for the March meeting of the Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC). The advisory body meets quarterly at Holy Cross Church in Dewitt.

Black candidates for sainthood will be workshop topic at Syracuse convocation

The All Saints Church Black Catholic Task Force will host a Convocation of Catholics of African Descent on April 12-14. The event will take place at All Saints Church, located at 1340 Lancaster Ave., in Syracuse. Bishop Douglas J. Lucia will open the convocation.

The goal of the event, where all are welcome, is to gather Catholics of African descent and friends to celebrate the presence, culture, legacy and future of Catholics of African descent in the Syracuse Diocese.

Peace advocate to speak at two area churches

Internationally known author and peace activist John Dear will be making two stops in the Diocese of Syracuse as part of his 5-month national speaking tour for his new book, The Gospel of Peace, A Commentary on Matthew, Mark and Luke from the Perspective of Non-Violence. Dear will be speaking at St. Francis Church in Binghamton on April 4th and at St. Lucy’s Church in Syracuse on April 18th. Both talks begin at 7pm, and each will end with a question-and-answer period.

Obituary: Father Thomas J. McGrath

Father Thomas J. McGrath, priest of the Diocese of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born in Syracuse on August 13, 1933 to Harold and Catherine (Hogan) McGrath. A parishioner of St. Brigid’s in Syracuse’s Tipperary Hill, he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1951 and was ordained in May 1959. His pastoral studies were completed at St. Andrew’s and St. Bernard’s Seminaries in Rochester and the Theological College Seminary at Catholic University in Washington D.C.

The Empty Tomb

Editor’s note: This was Bishop Lucia’s homily for Easter Sunday

“Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” (Mk 16:3)

When I heard this question in the Easter gospel, it translated in my head to: “Who is going to be there for them now?”  It is the reverberation of the question many of us ask when faced with the death of a friend or a loved one, especially a person who has been there for us in whatever life throws at us.

So, sisters and brothers, one can palpably feel this morning/this evening the emotion behind the women’s question.  “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb…who will let daylight back into our lives?”  I remember my mother telling me a few years ago of her own experience when her mother died very suddenly on an August afternoon in 1965 when I was only two years old and my younger brother was just two months old.  She said that it was like someone had turned out the lights and she wondered in the days and weeks that followed if the sun would ever shine in her life again.

Walking Together in Ordinary Time

In the candle-lit glory of the Easter Vigil Mass, I watched with joy as new sisters and brothers were welcomed to the Church through the waters of Baptism.  There just may have been water of a different kind that welled up in my eyes as I watched with a grateful heart.

To my new sisters and brothers, the warmest of welcomes! 

I hope that on Easter eve you saw and felt the warmth of the welcome that surrounded you as your time of preparation culminated with your sacraments of initiation.  I hope that you never stop feeling that welcome every time you join your new faith community around the table of our Lord. With time, it may become a quieter, more subtle welcome than the glorious embrace you experienced on Easter eve.  I hope you will understand that to be the quiet, loving embrace extended by a family that will, from now on, greet you with aptly named familiarity
