Name your baby after your high school? It’s a very Catholic story for a very Catholic celebration!

By Dc. Tom Cuskey

Family tradition; it’s a journey from one generation to the next. Children sometimes grow up in the same schools that their parents did. And every now and then, history kind of repeats itself.

Meet Faith Vavra Bergman and her son Nickolas from Binghamton. One is a Seton Catholic grad, and the other is about to be. The journey, though, went around the country, followed prior footsteps and shines a light on what Catholic schools are all about.

By the way, Catholic Schools Week is January 28 through February 3 in the Diocese of Syracuse, and this is just one of thousands of success stories, one that’s still in the process of being written.

Liverpool High School promotes inclusion and supports local mission

By Eileen Jevis

In addition to the academic curriculum, John Sheridan and Nicole Taylor, special-education teachers at Liverpool High School (LHS), teach life lessons, leadership skills and teamwork. They are also the co-advisers for the I Am Norm Aktion Club, an international organization dedicated to celebrating diversity. The club, with more than 10,000 members worldwide, helps adults with disabilities become competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.

Ludden boys basketball keeps Phoenix from rising

The Bishop Ludden Gaelic Knights hosted the Phoenix Firebirds on their homecourt last Thursday evening, coming away with a 79-52 win. We have great photo coverage to share.

Ludden senior forward Tim Dunham led all scorers with 24 points and freshman Liam Sheard added 13. Sophomore guard Jahzar Greene dished out eight assists. (Photos courtesy  Hal Henty Photography).

Foundation offers scholarships in name of Msgr. Yennock

Weeks before he died, Msgr. Eugene M. Yennock took a candy from a box and gave away the rest at Francis House in Syracuse.

“He loved sweets,” said Nancy Iannolo, RN, who finished a sweet project in Msgr. Yennock’s honor before Christmas: She spent many nights baking 5,000 cookies — nine varieties — to raise money for the Monsignor Yennock Foundation for Catholic school scholarships in the seven-county Diocese of Syracuse. She and her helpers piled a pound and a half of cookies onto plates and sold them for $30 each — all gone but “we still have the baker,” said Nancy’s daughter, Dr. Maria Iannolo.

Observing the Epiphany Eastern tradition

Father Andrew Baranski, Rector of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Syracuse, inscribes with blessed chalk the initials of the three kings — C+M+B — and the year 2024 over the main entrance door of the basilica at the 9 a.m. Mass on Jan. 7, the Epiphany of the Lord. The blessing is for all who enter the basilica. Parishioners and guests were given a blessed packet of incense and chalk and a prayer sheet to take home to mark the entrance door to their homes so the Magi watches over them all year. The initials of C+M+B — for Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar — are also interpreted as the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat which means “Christ bless this house.” (Courtesy Judy Ann Dougherty)

NYS discernment retreat focuses on the joy of the priestly vocation

By Dc. Tom Cuskey
Editor

More than 20 years ago, vocations directors from dioceses across New York State founded a collaborative retreat for men discerning a call to the priesthood. Bishop Douglas J. Lucia was then Father Lucia from the Diocese of Ogdensburg. He was among the founders of the annual event that continues on, taking place just after New Year at Christ the King Retreat House. Even the coronavirus pandemic didn’t put the brakes on the annual gathering as an online Zoom retreat replaced the in-person event.

Father Jason Hage, director of the Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Syracuse, will be conducting a parish mission at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 West Main St. in Endicott.
