How can we walk together?
Catechesis workshops help to strengthen programs, engage more families
By Tami S. Scott, editor
Baptism is the foundational sacrament — the first of seven — that welcomes individuals into the life of Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic Church. From there, children, on their way to becoming young adults, prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation, respectively. It is with these sacraments, during their formative years, that our youth learn more about their faith and joyfully develop a relationship with our Lord.
Last month, just over 60 catechists from around the Diocese attended one of three workshops led by Chicago-based ministry coach and speaker Denise Utter, called “Animating the Faith of Families at Home and in the Parish.”
Catechesis, or religious education, has traditionally taken the form of weekly afternoon or early evening classes held during the school year, where parents entrust their children’s faith formation to catechetical leaders and parish teams. In recent years, however, the program has incorporated newer models to include the entire family in the process.

2024 Impact Report illustrates a successful Hope Appeal campaign
By Elizabeth Landry, staff writer
In recent years, the Diocese of Syracuse has faced significant challenges, from filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to the abuse crisis to the closing and merging of several parishes and schools for various reasons. When the 2024 Hope Appeal campaign launched last September, many people were uncertain about how successful it would be given the challenges facing the Diocese, explained Foundation Executive Director Beth Hoey.
“There was some apprehension when the Hope Appeal started last fall, most notably due to the [ongoing] settlement [process] and some parishes that had to combine,” Hoey said.
Despite these challenges, this past Hope Appeal campaign, which ended on June 30, was one of the most successful campaigns in recent years. For Hoey, the reason for this great success all comes down to the very purpose of the Hope Appeal itself — the “why” that serves as the driving force behind the Hope Appeal staff and every individual who contributed to the results seen in the Impact Report.

Scouting out her faith
Local Scout earns Parvuli Dei religious emblem
By Elizabeth Landry, staff writer
A special occasion took place just before the end of Mass at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Minoa on June 29. Amelia Broedel, along with her parents, Lorie and Jeffrey Broedel, joined Father Stephen Wirkes near the altar for the presentation of the Parvuli Dei (“Children of God”) award and emblem. Dressed in her Scouting America uniform, Amelia smiled as Fr. Wirkes addressed the congregation and offered his congratulations to her for her achievement. Shortly after, Lorie pinned the emblem on her daughter’s uniform. The family belongs to St. Mary’s in Minoa.
Lorie shared that Amelia has been involved with Scouting America (previously known as the Boy Scouts of America) since she was in kindergarten. A member of Pack 210 in Kirkville, Amelia is now in fifth grade.
“She enjoys [being a Scout]. The volunteer work, walking in parades, camping, learning outdoor skills, how to take care of yourself — she enjoys it,” Lorie said.
