Happy New (Liturgical) Year!
The Advent season is upon us
By Dc. Tom Cuskey, editor
The season of Advent can be . . . well, confusing to those who do not pay close attention to what’s coming.
It’s purple in church-color, like Lent, but pre-Easter fasting doesn’t seem to fit in here. After all, Andy Williams is singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” isn’t he? We must remind ourselves, though, that he’s talking about Christmas and it’s not that time yet, at least not in practicing our faith. Yes, everyone seems to be partying, and that’s okay. Our true Christmas celebration begins on December 25th. Yes, Advent may be confusing to those who don’t know Jesus, but very spiritually rewarding to all who welcome him…
Actually thanking God it’s Friday
By Emily E. Long, Contributing writer
When you slouch into your office chair on a Friday morning thinking Thank God it’s Friday, how often does your thanks go beyond saying a simple prayer that by the grace of God, you got through the week? One group of young adults is taking the meaning of “TGIF” a bit deeper. Each month, a small but growing group gathers at St. Daniel Church in Syracuse for Young Adult First Fridays, dubbed “TGIF,” to celebrate the First Friday devotion with Eucharistic Adoration, confession, Mass and fellowship.
Minetto is for Maui; local connection fuels fundraiser
By Dc. Tom Cuskey
Editor
Just as sparks from a utility power line touched off a Hawaiian disaster, the international appeal for help — and a visitor to a diocesan parish — has sparked generous donations of aid and assistance to the people of Maui.
Sister Angie Laurenzo, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, recently visited her biological sister, a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) in Minetto in Oswego County.
‘Unsung heroes’: Hope Appeal supports diocesan dialogue
By Charlie young
Contributing writer
The mission of the Diocese of Syracuse is clearly stated in one word: evangelization. The origin of the word can be found in the Greek root euangelizesthai, or “bring good news.” Meet the team that is at the center of the diocesan effort to do just that, supported by the Hope Appeal.
“Communications is the cornerstone of the mission of the church,” Danielle Cummings underscores when talking about the team’s efforts…
Portrait unveiled in memory of SCC Music teacher
By Dc. Tom Picciano
Contributing writer
One of the “Saints” on the faculty of Seton Catholic Central in Binghamton has been remembered years after his death with the dedication of a portrait.
James Wheeler was a music teacher who retired in 2016 and died the following year.
Not long after that, students in an art class were asked to create Wheeler’s image on canvas. One of those paintings was by Alina Galyon who graduated in 2018…
Blessed Sacrament Syracuse adds flavor to a feast
The Syracuse Rescue Mission is well known for its amazing work in the community. The annual Thanksgiving Day feast they put on for hundreds of people who have nowhere to go is made possible by the hard work and generosity of staff, volunteers, corporate patrons and civic leaders. Oh, yes, and a group of young chefs from Blessed Sacrament School in Syracuse’s Eastwood neighborhood…
Grimes’ students fill baby bottles for Birthright
By Dc. Tom Cuskey, editor
The baby bottles go out empty and come back full. No, not with milk or formula but with coins and bills to help provide pregnant women and new moms with the basic necessities of life for their babies.
Students at Bishop Grimes Junior/Senior High School, along with staff and faculty, undertook the baby bottle drive during October, Respect Life Month. In November, they brought the bottle to the offices of Birthright of Onondaga County…
