Well over 100 tiny American flags with yellow ribbons carrying the names of honorees will adorn the yard at St. Francis Xavier Church in Marcellus for two weeks.
The flags were donated so that the youths of the parish could sell them as a remembrance of 911 and also as a fundraiser for their attendance Nov. 18-20 at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. St. Francis Xavier youths will attend the conference with youths from St. Joseph’s in Camillus.
“Just a gorgeous thing,” the St. Francis Xavier pastor, Father Daniel C. Muscalino, said of the display of flags.
“Our people bought a lot of them. It’s amazing. How wonderful they look.”
The flags were available in church and also online; participants filled out a form to honor a loved one. Participants may pick up their flags at the end of the display.
“I think it’s a spectacular display of American flags to help us remember,” Father Muscalino said, “because we’re also having a Mass of remembrance [on Sept. 11] … to help all of our people remember but also to help the young people keep this memory alive in the next generation. … I just think it’s a cool thing that these kids are doing.” (Sun photo | Tom Maguire)
