Thomas D’Onofrio found more than academic success as a Seton Catholic Central student in Binghamton. The 2025 graduate said his years at the school also strengthened his character and his trust in God. D’Onofrio graduated as co-valedictorian of Seton Catholic High School and now attends Villanova University, majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in mathematics. He said he gained many positive habits during high school that he continues to utilize in college — his work ethic, leadership skills, and nurturing his faith.
As a freshman in his second semester, D’Onofrio said he balances academics with a social life. “I always prioritize academics, especially when I have tests and need to study,” he said. “This approach has helped me achieve a 4.0 GPA and be placed on the Dean’s list in my first semester.”

Thomas D’Onofrio spends time with new friends.
D’Onofrio said he loves being in a new place and having the freedom to do and go wherever he wants. But he makes sure he fulfills his academic requirements first. “I go to every lecture and class and submit my homework assignments on time,” he said. “I believe that I received this work ethic from my time at Seton Catholic Central because I was taking AP and honors classes taught by excellent teachers.”
His strong faith continues to guide him through the rigors of attending a top-tier national university. While D’Onofrio understands that college is a time to have a lot of freedom, he stays away from bad and dangerous situations and navigates toward faith-filled activities. “There is a great group of Catholics who go to daily Mass, eat dinner together, hang out together, and share in the many clubs and campus experiences,” he said. Some of the clubs include Knights of Columbus, Villanovans for Life, and Bible Study. “It’s nice to know there are others on campus that share the same faith as me. My friends who are part of the Catholic activities are great and share strong moral values that help strengthen my own faith.
“Ultimately, my faith gives me comfort and the patience I need to succeed if I follow Jesus Christ and his teaching,” D’Onofrio added. He credits his spiritual foundation for his confidence as a leader.
When asked about one of the biggest challenges of his first year in college, his answer was decidedly more practical. “Doing laundry,” he said.
