CBA, Seton advance to New York State Final Four

Christian Brothers Academy varsity boys basketball team of Syracuse defeated Albany-CBA and Seton Catholic Central upended Section 3 representative Hannibal to advance to the New York State High School Basketball Final Four in Glens Falls next week.

The Brothers advanced to the state semifinal at Cicero-North Syracuse High School after handling Massena 78-42. They edged Henninger 76-75 in the Section 3 Class AA final. All-tournament selection Mike Goodman scored 19 points and recorded 10 rebounds in the win over Henninger.

Goodman led CBA with 12 points in the win over Albany-CBA and Stefan Thompson followed with 11.

As of March 8, the Brothers were ranked No. 18 among New York State’s Class AA high schools.

Saturday, March 21, CBA will be up against Section 6 champion and the state’s No. 1 ranked team, Niagara Falls.

Seton Catholic advanced to the state tournament with a 61-51 triumph over Chenango Valley in the Section 4 Class B championship. In the win over three-time defending Section 3 champ Hannibal, Saints’ freshman guard Tom Torto scored 24 points and Matt Meier scored 17.

Friday, March 20, the Saints will face Section 8 champion Malverne.

Meanwhile, the Bishop Grimes varsity girls basketball team’s storybook season came to an end when it fell to Section 4 champion Greene 41-31. Bishop Grimes’ final record on the season was 22-3. The Cobras moved on in the state tournament after beating Little Falls 42-32 in the Section 3 Class C championship. Amanda Marcely led Grimes with 13 points in the sectional final. Marcely also led the Cobras’ scoring in the loss to Greene, registering 15.

The Notre Dame varsity boys basketball team advanced to the Section 3 Class A final, but lost to powerhouse Jamesville-DeWitt 96-60. Pat Moore led the Jugglers with 18 points and Jerrell Hunter scored 16. Matt Petrone rounded out Notre Dame’s high scorers with 10.
