Each year, the Chrism Mass takes place on the Tuesday of Holy Week leading up to Easter. During this special Mass, holy oils are blessed that will then be distributed to churches and parishes to be used during the coming year. This year, the Chrism Mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 259 East Onondaga St. in Syracuse, on Apr. 15 at 11 a.m.
Three kinds of holy oil will be blessed during the Mass: the Oil of the Sick (used for anointing those seeking healing), the Oil of Catechumens (used for those entering the Church through the sacrament of Baptism) and Sacred Chrism (used for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders, as well as for anointing the altar and walls of a church building).
Additionally, all able diocesan-based priests attend and reconfirm their vows during the liturgy.
The Chrism Mass will also be live-streamed at youtube.com/syrdio for those unable to attend in person.
