The annual Bishop Mass and Picnic, celebrated in honor of the Deaf community, was held earlier this summer at The Church of the Nativity at St. Leo’s in Tully. Bishop Douglas J. Lucia presided over Mass and warmed the hearts of many as he signed during the Rite of Peace (“Peace be with you”) and at Communion (“The Body of Christ”).
The Mass was quiet and surreal with all readings, the psalm, the Hallelujah, and the Prayer of the Faithful signed by members of the Deaf community. This yearly heartfelt Mass by Bishop Lucia is treasured and cherished, said Michele Murphy, diocesan liaison to the Catholic Deaf Community.

This year’s honoree was Robert Menotti, who turned 100 years young in July.
Father Dennis Walker graciously hosted this year’s event. He is the pastor of the Nativity at St. Leo, St. Patrick Mission in Otisco, St. Joseph in LaFayette, and Immaculate Conception in Pompey.
“St. Leo’s Parish Center was the perfect location for our picnic,” Murphy said. “The picnic was plentiful and quaint. We were blessed with many people from the Deaf community in attendance.”
This year’s honoree was Robert Menotti, who turned 100 years young in July. Surrounded by loved ones, Bishop Lucia presented Mr. Menotti with a certificate celebrating his centennial.
“A good time was had by all!” Murphy exclaimed. “Happy 100th birthday, Robert! Thank you, Bishop Lucia, for honoring us with a beautiful Mass and picnic.”
