First-time coaches, cheerleading squad put on dynamic show

Young Eagles bring renewed spirit to Blessed Sacrament basketball games

If you attended one of Blessed Sacrament School’s basketball games during the past season, you likely saw the spirited young cheerleaders pepping up the players from the sidelines and showing off their skills during halftime. The newly-developed cheerleading team, led by first-time coaches Danielle Hantsch and Heather Marx, included girls in grades three through five, many of whom had never cheered before.

“It’s a good feeling to know we are coming out of this season as a first-time team with true team dynamics, new skills, school involvement, and spirit only an eagle could have,” said Coach Danielle.

During the season, the squad came up with new cheers that incorporate the team colors (red and white), as well as the school mascot, the eagle. At the games, fans, spectators and the basketball players seemed to get filled with team spirit as the cheerleaders assembled in a heart-shaped formation during the school alma mater, followed by a halftime routine performed to a mix of Taylor Swift songs.

Coach Danielle shared that the cheerleaders received support from the Blessed Sacrament school, church and community, and that she couldn’t be more thrilled and is looking forward to working with the girls in the years to come.

“I don’t know who learned more, whether it was the girls or whether it was me,” Coach Danielle said. “For being so young and just starting to learn a new, multi-faceted skill, their dedication to one another and the team was impressive … I’m so proud of them.”
