In memoriam: Sister Harriet Louise Hamilton, served in Cortland for 38 years

Sister Harriet Louise Hamilton, a Franciscan Sister who served the greater Cortland community for 38 years, has died at the age of 91.
Born in Hinsdale, N.Y. to Walter and Marguerite (Fuller) Hamilton, Harriet was raised in Cuba, N.Y. She received her undergraduate degree from St. Bonaventure University and earned a Master of Library Science degree from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Sister Harriet joined the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in 1955, professing final vows in 1962. In all, she joyfully lived the mission and charism of the Franciscan Sisters for 69 years.
Much of her service centered on congregation schools in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida where she served as teacher, librarian and principal.
She taught and eventually served as principal at St. Mary’s School in Cortland for 22 years. Following her teaching career, she continued to serve the St. Mary’s community for an additional 16 years, serving as pastoral associate, Eucharistic minister and minister serving the homebound and hospitalized.
Sister took ill in May of this year and was briefly hospitalized in Syracuse before going home to the Motherhouse in Allegany for end of life care. She passed away there on July 27.
Funeral services took place on August 7 in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial followed in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
