With buds in bloom, a gentle breeze and blue skies above, we couldn’t ask for a better day to celebrate the annual May Crowning held May 2 outside the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Bishop Douglas J. Lucia invited students from St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) in Baldwinsville to participate in this year’s tradition. Fifth-grader Luis served as reader while second-grader Josie placed a floral wreath atop the statue of the Blessed Mother.

“It’s such a blessing for us to be able to come and celebrate something that celebrates [Mary] because we honor her in our church, we honor her at our school,” said SMA principal Cathy Mackey. “And we know that she watches over us and just shrouds us in her grace, so it’s just such a blessing to be here.”

The Rev. Cliff Auth, pastor of linked parishes St. Mary of the Assumption and St. Augustine in Baldwinsville was also in attendance.

Master of ceremonies was the Rev. Brendan D. Foley, parochial vicar at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt and St. Anthony of Padua Church in Syracuse. Dr. Brian DuSell and Katherine Medicis provided the music.
