His catchphrase endures in the memory, and the garden that was named for him still serves as the perfect spot to reflect, meditate and pray as summer closes in Endicott.

Pictured is Father Charlie’s Garden for the parishes of Our Lady of Good Counsel & St. Ambrose. “What’s up, Tiger?” was the way that Father Charles Currie, who died in 2014, always greeted the kids at Mass or Faith Formation classes. The garden is behind Sophia House where the late Sister Lois Ann Barton did spiritual direction.

Built in about nine months by volunteers from OLGC several years ago, the garden is about 50-by-50 feet and features a Celtic Cross (Father Charlie was Irish). All funds were provided by donations from parishioners.

“Father Charlie was very loved by all and was everyone’s favorite confessor because he was a great example of God’s forgiveness in a kind and gentle way,” says Deacon Thomas M. Harley, Deacon Administrator for the canonically linked parishes. (Photo courtesy Mary Fran Cummiskey)
