Sister Clare Therese Pelkey died unexpectedly at Kingsway Manor in Schenectady, NY, on July 22, 2025. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 years.
Sister Clare was born in Schenectady, the daughter of Ruth and Milton Pelkey. After completing high school at St. Columba’s School, Clare entered the Sisters of St Joseph, making her first profession of vows in 1954.
Sister’s early years in the community spanned several missions where she taught music. Her degree in music from the College of Saint Rose was a lifelong support. At the same time, Sister Clare was deepening her love of spirituality when she was called to offer adult faith formation; her gifts of music and theology came together, and she used them richly.
Always an excellent writer, Clare contributed numerous columns for diocesan publications and community newsletters. She wrote a book for Eucharistic ministers, published by Ave Maria of Notre Dame Press and used in dozens of parishes throughout the country. In addition to her writing skills, she was an avid photographer who created many notecards from her pictures.
Clare continued her ministries in spirituality, earning certificates in pastoral care and spiritual direction. When the community asked her to serve as novice director, she accepted willingly. She was also becoming known as a spiritual director.
Although Clare was a vibrant community member, she also had a contemplative heart and a love of solitude. Clare had a deep love for the community. Her many friends, both in and beyond the community, enjoyed her creativity and her way of looking at life. She cherished time in nature, eagerly exploring new venues.
When the community asked Clare to move to Kingsway Manor, Clare responded willingly, confident that God would use her gifts there. Instead, God called his faithful servant home. The Sisters are grateful for the care and support of the staff at the Provincial House and Kingsway Manor.
Sister Clare was predeceased by her parents and her brother, James Pelkey. She is mourned by her nieces, Clare Morgan and Lorraine Robbins, several cousins, and dear friends, as well as the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Services for Sister Clare were held in the Provincial House in Latham. Contributions in her name may be made to the Office of Mission Advancement, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY. 12110.
