As St. Patrick Parade Days go in CNY, this was one of the better weather days in the event’s 42-year history. A little cloudy, temps in the 40’s on Salina Street, but it’s always warm and bright a stone’s throw away in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. That’s where the annual pre-parade Mass takes place, and the church was almost full.

Co-grand marshals Marty Cahill and David Lynch took the usual front pew seats reserved for such dignitaries, along with Gael of the Year Lauren Kochian.

Remaining pews filled in quickly with Hibernians, fellow Irish folk and Irish wannabes. All were welcome.

Among them was a group visiting from Parkrose Estates in Liverpool. “This is our first time!” Jill Janowski shared, explaining that some residents have attended previous parades, but this was the first group outing to the annual event. “We definitely try to get them out in the community, to support everything that’s going on local. Absolutely.” Janowski accompanied the group from the assisted living facility to support fellow resident Elizabeth Lyons, one of the harpists who provided beautiful music

Joseph’s House: ten years of growth and grace

By Dc. Tom Cuskey, editor

March 19th, the feast of St. Joseph, is often obscured by the revelry and secular celebration of that “other” saint’s feast two days earlier. With all due respect to the great St. Patrick, the 19th will go down in local history as the day that life took a giant step forward in the greater Syracuse area.

Joseph’s House, a facility dedicated to promoting “the sanctity of life and the dignity of women” is celebrating ten years of service to mothers dealing with an unplanned pregnancy or homelessness.

Love is in the details.

By Mark Ranieri, contributing writer

In our readings for Palm Sunday, we see that details matter to Jesus.

Jesus is precise when arranging both his entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and preparations for the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. He attends to the specifics such as the location of the donkey he will ride on and what to say to its owner, as well as what the man is like who will provide the setting for the Last Supper.

Our Lady of Good Counsel’s (OLGC) youth have a big a heart for sharing the life and love of Christ in both word and deed in the Southern Tier area and around the world.  That’s according to Kathy Hamilton, director of Faith Formation and junior high youth minister. Most importantly, she adds that they learn about the joy of giving.

Celebrating the shamrock at IC

The spirit of St. Patrick is celebrated throughout our diocese each March, especially in our schools. Immaculate Conception School in Fayetteville noted the Irish saint’s feast with Mass celebrated by Fr. Philip Hearn and assisted by Mrs. DeVito’s 3rd Grade class. Students participated as readers and gift bearers. One of the gifts offered was a Shamrock plant, the great symbol of Ireland and St. Patrick, their patron saint. Students learned that the shamrock also represents the Holy Trinity, meaning one leaf for God the Father, another for

‘Lectio divina’: Adding spiritual depth to our Lenten journey

Editor’s note: original print date was March 14, 2024.

It might be hard to believe, but we have passed the midway point of the Lenten season.  I am sure for those preparing for the Easter Sacraments, their anticipation grows. For others, there might be a certain dread of, “where has time gone and what have I really done this Lent?!”  However, as the Bible proclaims to us 365 times – “Fear not!”  I say this because the next two weeks of the Lenten Season have a character of their own and have been referred to in the Church’s Liturgical Calendar as “Passiontide.”

Growing Up in Ordinary Time

By Lucia A. Silecchia

Recently, I was in the happy company of a seven-year-old. She asked me the delightfully shocking, and shockingly delightful question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

The question was shocking to me because it has been decades since someone asked me this question with the earnest sincerity of my young
