Seminarian Carlos Gonzalez shares how his faith and discernment confirmed his path to priesthood

Local seminarian Carlos Gonzalez was 16 years old when he first felt a call to religious life – and it was initiated by a Liverpool High School teacher’s encouragement to consider the priesthood. Until that moment, Gonzalez had never even thought about it – he was thinking more along the lines of becoming a teacher or a police officer.

When asked why he thought his teacher, John Sheridan, also a youth minister at Baldwinsville’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, wanted to know if he’d ever reflected on becoming a priest, Gonzalez paused.

“That’s a great question,” he said. “I think that the Lord, for whatever reason, sees something in each [person] that he calls to the priesthood. I don’t know if there’s a particular reason why, but I think there’s got to be something that the Lord saw in me and said, you know, ‘I want you to do this.’”

Art is more than just another class at Bishop Ludden Jr/Sr High School. It carries a vibe all its own that students for years have likened to home. How? Why? What is it about art class? The radio playing music? The wax warmer? The walls, tables and floors embellished with names, paint and years-old memories?

They contribute, certainly. But the real reason is their teacher: Rhonda Henderson.

Obituary: Rev. Daniel W. Heintz

Rev. Daniel W. Heintz, 95, passed away peacefully with family members by his side on April 16, 2024 at The Nottingham in Jamesville. He was the son of Daniel and Marion Katherine (Evans), born August 18, 1928.

A native of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Utica, Father Heintz attended the parish elementary school and graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. He studied for the priesthood at St. Andrew’s and St. Bernard’s seminaries in Rochester. He was ordained in June 1954 and would have celebrated his 70th Jubilee this June.
