World Grandparent’s Day is celebrated Sept. 8

When you walk into the Liverpool home of Bob and Mary Petrarca, the first thing you might notice is a group of photos hanging at equal height on the hallway wall — one of each of their 10 grandchildren ranging in age from 18 to 4.

In that timespan and beyond (they’ve been married 44 years), the Petrarcas have experienced great peaks but also deep valleys that would try the most committed of couples. Yet, Mary said she would live them all over again. Why?

Because they have profound testimonies to share of God’s love through it all.

Sunday, September 8 is World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Francis chose Psalm 71:9 for this year’s theme: “Do not cast me off in my old age,” and has invited everyone “to show our tender love for grandparents and the elderly members of our families.”

Jeff Dixe has spent decades in leadership positions — as a special education teacher and administrator, in parish ministry, and now, as a newly ordained deacon and director of Adult and Ministerial Formation. He said that as a leader, praying, listening, learning and being present is 95% of the battle.

When Ean Corrado, his wife Valerie and their two kids relocated from New York City to Binghamton last year, a permanent residence was not on their radar.

‘How can I be more attentive in my daily living?’

Labor Day for many is a time of adjustment – adjustment to a new daily routine, adjustment to an empty or emptier nest for those with college bound or leave-taking family members, adjustment to retirement for some and adjustment to a change of seasons both in nature and in life. Last weekend, the morning glories took me by surprise — as they always do.

During the all-too-brief months of this past spring and summer, I bought some plants and tried my best to give them the attention they needed so that they would grow into the plants I wanted and the plants I planned. I am too impatient to be a serious gardener, so I was not attempting anything more than keeping the flowers in a few pots alive and well throughout the season. Some did not
