Four Blessed Sacrament students representing grades three through six competed in a game of Jeopardy against fourth-grade teacher Mr. Long, gym teacher Mr. Cacchione, Fr. Brendan Foley and Fr. Dennis Walker to see who had the most knowledge in religion, math, social studies, science and Blessed Sacrament School history. The event took place on January 31 as part of Catholic Schools Week. Panelists were asked questions such as how many bones are in the body, the name of the prayer we say before meals, who was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the name of the first successful English colony in America.

The student panelists were knowledgeable and quick to hit their buzzers to answer questions as a lively and loud audience encouraged and celebrated each correct answer. Fifth-grade student Derrick Osvoldik correctly listed the seven sacraments as the panelist of teachers and priests struggled to answer the question, “What bishop was a part of Blessed Sacrament Schools’ opening?”

Teacher Heather Marx acted as an emcee for the event. She said Catholic Schools Week is a tradition celebrated in various ways through exciting, fun, spiritually inspired and educationally enriched activities and experiences. “The Jeopardy-style game was a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat experience that was close until the end,” said Marx. “The student team surprised the teacher/priest team with their knowledge of religion, science and mathematics while the teacher/priest team wowed the crowd with their BSS history knowledge and social studies.” The score was 3,100 to 3,500 in favor of the adults. A bonus question given to the students ended the game with a tie.

“We can’t thank Father Brendan and Father Dennis enough for taking the time out of their busy schedules to test their knowledge, have fun with us and spend quality time with our students,” Marx said.
