Here’s a look at some of the stories making headlines today:
• This morning, family, friends, and colleagues gathered to say goodbye to Bill Carey. A veteran journalist in the region, Carey was “the voice of Syracuse” for decades and an inspiration and mentor to those around him. Carey died August 7 after a battle with cancer. He was 61. His funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral this morning by Bishop Robert J. Cunningham.
In his homily, Bishop Cunningham spoke of Carey’s warmth and professionalism, his love for his family and his work. Those sentiments were echoed in a moving reflection offered by Carey’s longtime friend and colleague, NewsChannel 9 anchor and managing editor Dan Cummings.
Cummings shared a piece of his last conversations with Carey: “He said I love you, he said he loved his friends, and he said friendships should be celebrated. Love. Friendship. Celebration.” Speaking to Carey’s wife, children, grandchildren, and siblings, Cummings assured them “Bill’s love and friendship will be celebrated forever.”
