Statement of Bishop Douglas J. Lucia
Bishop of Syracuse
Editor’s note: normally, we would feature Bishop Lucia’s column from the previous edition of The Catholic Sun. We instead are sharing Bishop’s message to the Diocese following the tragic shooting deaths of an Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputy and an officer of the Syracuse Police Department. A link to the regular column follows this message:
April 15, 2024
Today, our diocesan family is in mourning for the senseless violence that has taken the lives of two public servants who sought to serve and protect our community by simply going to work. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and co-workers, especially those police officers who served with them in the line of duty in the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
In this time of testing and pain, I pray we may renew our resolve as a community to work together and find ways to make our streets and neighborhoods safer for all. As we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we also express our gratitude to all members of law enforcement who put their lives on the line each day, as well as to their spouses, children and loved ones who support them and pray for their safety. We pray that all who serve our community will be filled with courage, patience, fortitude, generosity of spirit and, most especially, wisdom in carrying out their duties.
In this Easter season, we pray that the light of Christ’s resurrection will bring peace and healing to all so deeply wounded by this sad and tragic event.
