Story and photos by Deacon John Brusa

In early April, Bishop Douglas J. Lucia presided over the Institution of Lectors and Acolytes at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Though any member of the faithful can be asked to read or serve at Mass, those preparing for Holy Orders are instituted to the ministries of Lector and Acolyte.

Instituted lectors are trained and appointed to proclaim the Word of God to the liturgical assembly, fostering in themselves a love for and knowledge of Sacred Scripture. Instituted acolytes are appointed to aid priests and deacons at the altar; they are also able to purify vessels and assist with the distribution of holy Communion.

In total, Bishop Lucia instituted 15 lectors and 30 acolytes from various dioceses across the country. From our diocese, seminarian John Buttner was instituted to the Ministry of Lector, and seminarian Jonathan Hoole was instituted to the Ministry of Acolyte.
