The Bishop Grimes Cobras earned their first Section III basketball title since 2008 Feb. 27 with a 72-60 victory over Syracuse Academy of Science at the SRC Arena.

BG 1 0G3A7651The Cobras jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed, leading by as much as 20 points in the second half.

Senior AC Ater led the Cobras with a game-high 23 points; junior Shawn Gashi scored 15; and senior sharp-shooter Johnny Wike scored 11, including a pair of game-breaking three-pointers.

The Cobra defense was key to the big win. They held the high-scoring Atoms to just 38 points through the first three quarters and created turnovers that led to many fast break baskets of their own. The #13 state-ranked Cobras (21-2) advance to the Regional Championship March 5, when they face the Section IV Champion, #3-ranked Norwich, at SUNY Cortland.
