Dr. Marie Hilliard, a registered nurse and canon lawyer, will speak on

“Infringement on the Exercise of Conscience in the Public Square” on Sept. 22 at Le Moyne College.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. in Grewen Auditorium in Grewen Hall.

Members of the Catholic Church and all others who adhere to a religious tradition have the right to defend their faith. The ability to do so increasingly is being threatened by not only political policies, but also the enshrinement of such policies into legal mandates restricting First Amendment rights.

Dr. Marie Hilliard will explore the tensions between religious freedom and conscience rights, as well as escalating public policies that threaten such freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. She has been involved in health-care regulation at the state and national levels.

The talk is sponsored by the Order of Malta and Le Moyne’s Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection.
