A history essay contest for Catholic school students and Catholic homeschooled students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be held by the Catholic Textbook Project, publisher of history textbooks. The essay challenge requires students to choose a faithful Catholic of historical significance and describe how this person influenced the times in which he or she lived. Although saints are a possible choice, the contest challenge is much wider and includes any practicing, faithful Catholic man or woman.
There will be four separate contest divisions: 5/6 grade Catholic school students; 7/8 grade Catholic school students; 5/6 grade Catholic homeschoolers; 7/8 grade Catholic homeschoolers. Each division winner will receive a cash prize of $100.
Essays should be typed, double-spaced and in 11 point Times New Roman font. For students in the 5/6 division, essays should be at least 450 words but no more than 1,000 words. For the 7/8 division, essays should be at least 600 words but no more than 1,500 words. All writing should be in the student’s own words. If quotes from another author, book or the internet are used, footnotes must be cited. Winning essays will be published on the Catholic Textbook Project blog and Facebook pages.
